The Trakehner Horse is often considered to be the ideal, modern competition horse. The Trakehner has long sloping shoulders, broad forehead, finely chiseled head and a narrow, Arabian muzzle. It also has a strong back and muscular hindquarters that give it power and speed. It is available in any color, but the most common include chestnut, gray, bay and black.
The lightweight build and intelligence of the Trakehner makes it very well suited for eventing and dressage. Dressage is a popular sport often referred to as “horse ballet.” It is designed to test a horse's training as well as its power and grace.
As renowned athletes and performers, members of the Trakehner have won numerous international titles and medals. It is spirited, athletic, and easy to train. And though they were once used on the farm, the Trakehner is almost exclusively a sporting horse today.
The Trakehner descended from the now-extinct and primitive East Prussian Schweiken. The breed began in thirteenth century East Prussia, what is now Lithuania, but it was The Royal Trakehen Stud Administration, established in 1732, that propelled the breed into its modern form. After 1945, the majority of breeding was centered in West Germany, but the horse can be found all over the world.
