Treeing Walker Coonhounds resemble a Basset hound, with their long ears and distinct muzzle. Like the Basset, the Treeing Walker Coonhound is a descendant of the English Foxhound. A powerful dog excelling in game sense, drive and speed, the Treeing Walker Coonhound is an efficient and reliable hunter of raccoons, squirrels and possums. The Treeing Walker "trees" its prey and has been known to almost climb the tree to get at it. When it traps its prey, it will bay its distinctive howl, telling the hunter that the prey has been cornered.

The Treeing Walker has been known to be high-strung, however it’s generally an easily trainable dog that loves to please. It’s primarily a hunting dog, but can fit in well as a family pet too and tends to get along well with children and other pets.

Active and spirited, the Treeing Walker Coonhound needs lots of exercise and a daily task to thrive. This dog loves the hunt of the scent and could track for days, so prospective owners should keep their yard’s well-fenced lest their beloved family pet catches the scent of a rabbit. Because they’re a treeing breed, they can typically scale barriers as high as 6 feet.

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is an easy care breed. An occasional combing and brushing are all that’s needed. However, their ears need to be checked as they are prone to ear infections. There are no known health issues with the Treeing Walker Coonhound, however it’s a rare breed.
