With its thick, bushy, fox tail, pointed ears, and large structure, the Turkish Van is an eye-catching breed. With color often restricted to the head and tail, the Turkish Van has a unique coat with only one type of hair (most breeds have three types). They are muscular cats with big paws and are known for being good jumpers.

Their trademark hair will grow thick in the winter and then shed in the summer. It is also very quick to dry. This is probably related to the Turkish Van's distinction of being one of the few cats that love water. Nicknamed 'The Swimming Cat,' Turkish Vans will actually submerge themselves in water if possible, getting themselves into sinks, bathtubs, or even their water dishes.

The Turkish Van is known for not only playing hard, but also sleeping hard. Though this large and athletic cat can be quite active, the Turkish Van knows how to take it easy and loves nothing more than curling up with you for a nice long nap.

The Turkish Van breed is thousands of years old and is a naturally occurring breed that developed in the Lake Van region of Turkey. Rare and precious, it's protected in its native country.
