Horseback riding is very popular in Vietnam and the country has its own breed of horse called the Vietnamese Hmong. This native breed is very small, but capable of carrying a full-grown male adult. The horse is characterized by a a broad forehead with a thick, cropped mane that forms a crest. They are seen in buckskin, pewter dun with eel-stripe, sorrel, bay, paint, grey and light palomino.

The Vietnamese Hmong lives in the Ha Giang Province of Vietnam, a very remote area. They are good-natured horses that are primarily used as riding horses or pack horses. They are especially great in the mountains because they are surefooted and confident.

Not much is known about the origins of this particular breed. However, the Vietnamese Hmong is thought to be a descendent of Sichuan, Timorean or Mongolian Horse. They have experienced very minimal outside influence because the area in which they live is so remote. Though the breed is not officially registered or involved in a regimented breeding program, there are an estimated fifty thousand in existence.
