The Vizsla, also known as the Hungarian Pointer, is a sleek, muscular, medium-sized, hunting dog with a beautiful, rusty-gold, short coat and a distinguished, robust and elastic gait. Having a name whose literal meaning in Hungarian is “alert and responsive,” Vizslas are true to their history.

The Vizsla originated as a Hungarian hunting dog, and probably descended from two ancient breeds: the Transylvanian Hound and the Turkish Yellow Dog (now extinct). Traditionally, owning a Vizsla was a symbol of aristocracy in its native Hungary.

Lively, gentle-mannered, demonstrably affectionate and sensitive, the Viszla is still a fearless dog with a strong protective instinct. They make extraordinary family pets or hunting dogs. Though they’re happy to spend a few hours outside, Vizslas prefer to be treated as a member of the family and appreciate being close to their owners.

Training a Vizsla is usually easy thanks to its natural intelligence and eagerness to please. As a generally sensitive dog, they don’t respond well to discipline and harsh training. Patience and positive reinforcement work best with this softer breed.

The Vizsla has a smooth, shorthaired coat that’s generally easy to keep in peak condition. Vizslas are considered an extremely healthy breed although some are prone to skin and/or food allergies. They are also susceptible to hip dysplasia and epilepsy. Extra care should be taken with the use of anesthesia during surgery as this breed is particularly sensitive to the drug.
