The Waler is an Australian work horse back from the dead. Though once pronounced extinct, the breed has been reestablished by dedicated Australian breeders intent on saving this crucial part of their country's history.
Although the Waler can look very awkward when young, this horse grows into a graceful and refined animal. They are known for their impressive bone structure and full tail which protects them from the harsh winter wind. They have strong legs and neck, hard hooves, and well-sprung ribs. They are usually seen in chestnut, brown, black, bay and grey, although their mane and tail may have a taffy coloring. White markings are also common on their face and legs.
The Waler can be divided into 4 categories: The pony waler, the light waler, the medium waler and the heavy waler. All categories are not only intelligent, but also strong, athletic, and great at jumping. The Waler Horse possesses incredible endurance and stamina and can survive in harsh conditions, which was why it was so often used in war, a factor that almost led to its demise.
The Waler was first introduced to Australia in the 1800s. Its name comes from the location, New South Wales, where it was first bred. They were bred in the harsh outback of Australia so they developed the ability to survive without much water or food. During the First World War, thousands of Walers were sent off as part of the Desert Mounted Corps. They did not come home and the breed was believed extinct. However, in the 1980s, breeders and The Waler Horse Society of Australia encouraged the breeding and survival of these amazing animals by back breeding with the Australian Stock Horse. Today, its making a comeback.
