The Weimarner breed is several centuries old and originally bred to hunt, track and bring down big game. As big game became scarce, the dog was adapted to smaller game and upland birds. The Weimarner also has a reputation as a water retriever.
Weimarners tend to be tuned into their owners and love to train. With the right owner, the Weimarner can hunt or play for hours on end – meaning this isn’t a dog for a sedentary owner. The Weimarner needs lots of outlets for its energy, including long walks, runs and space to be active.
The Weimarner can be a little stubborn, so trainers need to start from a young age teaching basic manners and household rules. The Weimarner loves a challenge and a task, so turning training into a game is your best strategy. This breed tends to excel at hunting trials, obedience, field trials, hunt tests, agility, tracking, flyball, search and rescue and any other competition that lets him show off his skills.
The Weimarner is generally good with children and tolerant of other animals, but their high energy levels can sometimes be overwhelming for tiny tots or small dogs.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, entropion, bleeding disorders, torsion, esophagus problems, spinal disease and heart defects.
