The Weimardoodle is not a purebred dog, nor is it a recognized breed. Weimardoodle are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Weimaraner and the Poodle. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Though the Weimardoodle cross can pull behavioral characteristics from both the Poodle and the Weimaraner, the Weimardoodle is best known for its high energy levels and poodle-like coat.

Like Weimaraners, Weimardoodles are full of energy and love to train, but they can be overwhelming for the inexperienced or non-active owner. The Weimardoodle appeals to owners who love the spirit and hunting capabilities of the Weimaraner, but are looking for a dog that doesn’t shed.

Along with their proclivity for training and sport, the Weimardoodle, with its Weimaraner and Poodle ancestry, can be downright stubborn. Professional trainers suggest using positive reinforcement like food treats and to try training exercises that aren’t too repetitive.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, torsion, spinal disease, heart defects and distichiasis. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific health issues.
