Welsh Ponies & Cobs are divided into 4 different categories: the Welsh Pony, the Welsh Cob, the Welsh Pony of Cob type and the Welsh Mountain Pony. The latter is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful ponies in the world. The Welsh Mountain Pony has big eyes, small ears, a sloping shoulder and a deep chest. The Welsh Pony is very similar in appearance, but with a slighter build. The Welsh Pony of Cob type is heavier and the Welsh Cob is the largest of all 4 types of horses. They can be seen in any color excluding pinto.
Welsh Ponies & Cobs are native breeds. They are known for their hardiness as well as their kind and loyal nature. These calm and steady animals are very popular with children, but make great mounts for adults as well. They are also excel in jumping, eventing, and dressage – a sport designed to test a horse's grace and level of training. They are primarily a driving and riding pony, although they used to perform many tasks. These included plowing fields, transporting families to church or even taking farmers to the market.
Welsh Ponies and Cobs evolved from the now-extinct Celtic pony. They originated in Wales and had to adapt to their harsh environment, one that included rough and rocky terrain. Over the years, the breeds have been influenced by Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Roadster Hackneys, and ancient horses that arrived with the Romans. The Welsh Pony & Cob Society was formed in 1901 with the goal of regulating the breed and helping to preserve these amazing horses.
