Composed and levelheaded, the Welshie is described as an easy dog. The handsome Welsh Terrier is a typical terrier, known for his inquisitive nature and spunky attitude. Independent, yet loyal the Welsh Terrier is happy to spend an afternoon playing with you or simply entertaining himself with a favorite chew toy.

Stubborn and a little obstinate, the Welsh Terrier is an ideal candidate for early-intervention obedience classes. Owners should start training early, right from puppyhood. Professional trainers suggest keeping the training varied and exciting as the intelligent Welshie is easily bored. As with most dogs, positive reinforcement works best. The Welsh Terrier excels at hunting, Earthdog trials, agility and lure coursing.

For multi-family households, the Welsh Terrier does best with larger companions. They tend to view pet rodents, snakes and cats as potential prey or mortal enemies.

The Welsh Terrier is a double-coated dog, meaning it has an undercoat designed to insulate it against the cold and an upper layer of wiry fur meant to protect it against dirt and rain. Typically, pets are clipped while show dogs are hand-stripped. Regular brushing with a slicker or wet comb works best.

Health issues common to the breed are patellar luxation, cataracts, glaucoma, distichiasis and lens luxation. Consult your breeder or veterinarian if you have any concerns.

Originally, this breed began in Wales, but became immensely popular in the United States after the infamous Charlie, John F. Kennedy’s beloved pet, captured America’s heart.
