Despite his tiny size, the Westie makes a fantastic watchdog. This inquisitive little terrier loves to keep an eye on the neighborhood, letting you know about everything from approaching mailmen to errant squirrels.
Typical of a terrier, the West Highland White Terrier is a boisterous and bouncy little devil with a light spirit and a generally sweet disposition (unless you’re a mouse, then it’s war). Ideally, the Westie is happiest when he’s busy and loves to have a task, whether it’s chewing on a favorite toy or moving your socks from the laundry room to under the couch.
Generally a happy-go-lucky character, the West Highland Terrier usually gets along well with other pets. They may try to steal the top dog spot, but they’re not an overly dominant breed. If your children have hamsters, rabbits or other rodent pets, you may want to consider a breed other than a terrier.
When it comes to obedience, the Westie is a true Terrier. Somewhat obstinate and easily bored, owners should have a strong sense of humor and a lot of patience. While not malicious or overtly disobedient, the West Highland Terrier just likes to have fun.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, Legg-Perthes disease and craniomandibular osteopathhy (CMO).
Originally, this breed descended from the Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier. First known as the Poltalloch Terrier, the breed was believed to have begun in the 1800s. Some breeders trace the breed back to a Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm in the Argyll region of Scotland while others claim the breed’s heritage belongs to the 8th Duke of Argyll – Duke Campbell.
