The Westiepoo is not a purebred dog, nor is it a recognized breed. Westiepoos are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the West Highland White Terrier and the Poodle. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).
Though the Westiepoo cross can pull behavioral characteristics from both the Poodle and the West Highland White Terrier, the Westiepoo is best known for its inquisitive, fun-loving spirit and poodle-like coat. Prospective owners like that they can typically expect a dog with an active energy level that also boasts the non-shedding coat of the Poodle.
Like Westies, Westiepoos are full of energy and love to play. Filled with joy and a sparky spirit, the Westiepoo is known for its rambunctious sense of humor, easy-going attitude and remarkable intelligence.
Along with their light-hearted attitude and busy lifestyle, the Westiepoo, with its West Highland White Terrier and Poodle ancestry, can be downright stubborn. Professional trainers suggest using positive reinforcement like food treats and to try training exercises that aren’t too repetitive.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for Legg-Perthes, progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific health issues.
