The Whoodles is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Whoodles are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Soft-Coated Wheaton Terrier and the Poodle. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Though the Whoodles cross can pull behavioral characteristics from both the Poodle and the Wheaten Terrier, the Whoodles is best known for its high-spirited and fun-loving attitude and its poodle-like coat. Prospective owners like that they can typically expect a dog with an active energy level that also boasts the non-shedding coat of the Poodle.

Like Wheaten Terriers, Whoodles are full of energy and love to jump. They’re known for jumping on anyone and everyone, so prospective owners may want to invest in a higher fence. With their inquisitive nature and strong vermin-hunting instinct, the Whoodles is known for its spunky spirit and somewhat headstrong attitude.

Along with their sometime impervious manner and hectic lifestyle, the Whoodles, with their Wheaton Terrier and Poodle ancestry, can be downright stubborn. Professional trainers suggest using positive reinforcement like food treats and to start training as early as possible.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, renal cortical hypoplasia and cataracts. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific health issues.
