The Wire Fox Terrier is an energetic dog who likes to keep busy. They enjoy playing outside and they love playing inside. While this is a great dog for active families and experienced dog owners, the Wire Fox Terrier might not be the right choice for sedentary or subdued owners.

The Wire Fox Terrier is very intelligent and can learn when it wants to (particularly if there’s a treat involved), but obedience can sometimes be a challenge for owners expecting robotic obedience. Yet for the right trainer, one that’s patient and able to keep a dog’s attention, the challenge can be very rewarding.

Like the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Wire Fox Terrier likes to vocalize his emotions – happiness, loneliness and displeasure. A neglected and lonely dog is going to upset a lot of neighbors, so try to give your friend lots of love, attention and distractions.

Unpredictable and free-spirited, Wires are fun to watch when they play. They’ll entertain themselves, but usually prefer if their owners either join in or just watch the fun. Overall, the Wire plays hard and, when he’s ready, works hard. Everything is done full force – whether it’s skidding through the house when the doorbell rings or hunting down a mouse.

Health issues common to the breed are progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, Legg-Perthes, heart defects and epilepsy.

The Wire was first developed in England by fox hunters. They wanted a breed that would be fearless enough to dig into fox burrows and active enough to keep up on the hunt. The popularity of the breed soared in the 1930s, after The Thin Man films and The Adventures of Tin Tin comics both came out featuring Wire Fox Terriers.
