The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon has the distinction of being the rarest dog in the Sporting group. Prospective owners should be prepared for a long search to find a breeder. Despite its loving nature and abilities as a pointer, this dog is still rare, so consider yourself lucky if you find one.

A solid, dependable hunter, Griffons love to work. They typically work within gun range, pointing and retrieving upland birds. With their protective coat, they’re also happy to retrieve in water. Because of the Griffons’ long hunting history, breeders tend to encourage these traits, promoting a natural hunting instinct and preferring to sell to owners who will encourage it. The Griffon is best with active owners who don’t mind taking their dog for a run or even a long swim.

Overall, the breed is eager to please, but they can still be independent and a touch insubordinate. Griffons tend to be sensitive dogs and don’t do well with harsh training or strict punishment. Like most dogs, they respond well to consistent, loving training that centers on positive reinforcement. This is a strong dog that’s not afraid to show its soft side.

When it comes to multi-animal households, the Griffon usually gets along well with other pets once a pack dynamic has been established. They sometimes like to harass cats, but that’s to be expected. For grooming, weekly brushing, regular teeth and ear cleanings and the occasional bath are usually all that’s needed.

Health issues common to the breed are hip dysplasia, ectropion and entropion. Generally, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a genetically sound and healthy breed.
