Energetic, but not anxious, Xolos (as they’re sometimes called) are attentive and tend to hang on your every word. They’re easily trained, especially using positive reinforcement and food as a bribe.
Extroverted and inquisitive, they’re typically forthcoming with other animals and very friendly with children. Though the Xolo is a hardy breed, known for its spunk and resilience, owners should be careful that children are gentle with the dog, especially the Toy variety.
The Xoloitzcuintli is a rare breed and even more unique because it’s available in a hairless variety. The hairless strain of this breed has the advantage of not shedding or requiring regular brushing – making it an ideal choice for allergy sufferers.
However, prospective owners need to be prepared to spend time on regular skin care. Without regular washing and moisturizing, the Xolo is prone to breakouts of pimples and blackheads. Typical grooming includes a daily wet wipe or sponge bath followed by an application of hand lotion.
In colder climates, the Xoloitzcuintli needs a sweater or coat to protect it from the weather. It also needs a good coat of sunscreen in the summer. Just like us, they can burn easily.
The breed originated in Mexico and may be almost 3,500 years old. In ancient Aztec spirituality, the Xolos were believed to be sacred – they were seen not only as the dog who gave life to man, but also as a partner to escort their masters to the underworld after death. The dogs were also raised for meat, though this practice doesn’t continue today.
