The Yili Horse comes from the Xinjiang area of northwestern China and the Chinese name for the Yili Horse is “Wusun.” It is compact with a straight profile and well-defined withers that blend into its back which is strong and short. It also has a deep chest, well sloped shoulders, muscular legs and an unusually long loin. A slightly arched neck is very common in male Yili Horses. Bay is the most common color for this breed, although black, chestnut and gray can also be seen.
Because of its endurance, the Yili Horse is often used as a riding or driving horse. It can travel very far at a surprisingly fast pace. In fact, some claim that the Yili Horse can complete a kilometer in an astonishing 1 minute and 15.4 seconds! Though a useful and speedy riding horse, the Yili is also used for its milk and meat.
The Yili Horse first appeared in 1900 and is descended from a mix of Mongolian horses bred to Russian horses. It is considered to be a new breed of horse in China and comes from the Yili region of China, area famous for its horse breeding. The breed includes the native Kazak and the more current Yili breed , which is an improved version.
