The Yorktese is not a purebred dog, nor is it an AKC recognized breed. Yorktese dogs are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Yorkshire Terrier and the Maltese. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Though the Yorktese cross can pull behavioral characteristics from both the Maltese and the Yorkshire Terrier, the Yorktese is best known for its spirited and playful attitude and its soft, non-shedding, Maltese-like coat. Prospective owners enjoy that they can typically expect a dog with a rambunctious energy level that also boasts the non-shedding coat and intelligence of the Maltese.

Like their Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese ancestors, Yorktese dogs are full of spirit and love to play. They have a gentle disposition and a sensitive nature that makes them wonderful companions for children. Typically, they’re smart, full of energy, eager to learn and very devoted.

Like Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese dogs, Yorktese dogs do best indoors. Their exercise needs are moderate, but they enjoy regular walks or the occasional trip in your arms. These little travelers can be anxious with too much stimulation, but they’re typically happy to spend a day shopping with you or riding in the car.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, liver shunts, hypoglycemia, pancreatitis and lymphangiactasia. Typically though, hybrid breeds are less vulnerable to breed-specific or genetic health issues.
